If you’ve spent any amount of time around me, you probably already know I love it when people lean into what makes them different.
Not because being different is trendy.
Not because being quirky is somehow better.
But because the best photos happen when people stop trying to fit inside someone else’s idea of what they’re supposed to be.
This session was a perfect example of that.
Technically, these photos were taken for a fifth anniversary session.
However, they also happen to be some of my favorite Idaho State Penitentiary engagement-style photos because they perfectly capture what I believe great couples photography should do:
Tell your story.
Not somebody else’s.
The couple got married at the Idaho State Penitentiary years ago, so returning there felt meaningful from the very beginning.
But instead of trying to create something traditionally romantic, we leaned into something much more interesting.
Something that felt completely and unapologetically them.
After all, they lovingly refer to themselves as The Spooky Lopezes.
So naturally, we embraced the spooky.
And honestly?
I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.

There are plenty of beautiful places to take photos in Boise.
The foothills.
Lucky Peak.
Downtown.
The Greenbelt.
All wonderful options.
However, none of them feel quite like the Idaho State Penitentiary.
The historic stone buildings, weathered textures, iron bars, and winding pathways create an atmosphere that’s completely different from anywhere else in the Treasure Valley.
It’s dramatic.
It’s historic.
It’s a little eerie.
And that’s exactly what makes it so interesting.
If you’re looking for a location with character, it’s hard to beat.

One of the reasons photographers love the Idaho State Penitentiary is because it offers so much visual variety.
Within a single session, you’ll find:
As a result, every corner feels like a new backdrop.
The location tells a story before anyone even steps into the frame.

This session felt like stepping into someone’s favorite storybook.
Not a fairy tale.
Something a little darker.
A little moodier.
A little more mysterious.
Exactly the way they wanted it.
The best part wasn’t that we created something spooky.
It was that we created something honest.
Because being spooky isn’t an aesthetic for these two.
It’s part of who they are.
Their friends know it.
Their family knows it.
And they know it.
That’s why the session worked so well.
It wasn’t a theme.
It was authenticity.
The old prison walls, dramatic architecture, and moody atmosphere gave us the perfect setting to celebrate that side of their relationship.
And because they had originally gotten married there, the location carried an extra layer of meaning.
It wasn’t just beautiful.
It was theirs.

One of my favorite things about photography is watching people realize they don’t have to fit into a mold.
You don’t have to look like every couple on Pinterest.
You don’t have to recreate trends.
You don’t have to tone yourself down.
If you love spooky things?
Let’s do spooky.
If you’re obsessed with books?
Let’s go to a bookstore.
If your dream engagement session involves pizza, wildflowers, or wandering through the desert at blue hour?
Let’s do that.
The best photos happen when you stop asking:
“What should engagement photos look like?”
And start asking:
“What feels like us?”
That’s where the magic lives.

One of the reasons this location works so well is because it pairs beautifully with a variety of styles.
Some favorites include:
However, the most important thing is choosing something that feels authentic.
Not a costume.
Not a character.
You.
The location already provides enough drama.
You don’t need to force it.

The Idaho State Penitentiary photographs beautifully throughout the year.
However, fall is especially magical.
The cooler weather, changing foliage, and softer light naturally enhance the mood of the location.
That said, every season brings something different.
And honestly?
A cloudy day here can be absolutely perfect.

You might love the Idaho State Penitentiary if:
It’s especially perfect for creative people who want something a little outside the box.

This location might not be the best fit if:
And that’s okay.
The best location is always the one that feels most like your story.

Yes, although it’s always a good idea to check current photography policies and admission requirements before planning your session.
Absolutely. It’s one of the most unique and visually interesting locations in Boise.
Not at all. “Spooky” can mean anything from subtly moody to fully embracing a dark, alternative aesthetic.
Anything that feels authentic to you and complements the atmosphere you’re hoping to create.
Definitely. At the end of the day, they’re both celebrations of your relationship.

Hi, I’m Natalie.
One of the things I love most about photography is helping people create photos that actually feel like them.
Not the version they think they’re supposed to be.
The real version.
The weird version.
The creative version.
The spooky version.
The version that laughs at inside jokes, collects odd hobbies, and has a relationship that’s entirely its own.
This session was a perfect reminder that meaningful photos don’t come from following rules.
They come from embracing who you are.
The Idaho State Penitentiary just happened to provide the perfect backdrop.
If you’re dreaming up a couples session that’s creative, personal, and completely your own, I’d love to help bring it to life.

Let's do this thing
I literally have no words. Natalie is so amazing and talented, and not to mention how kind she is. She has outdone herself! My pregnancy has actually been pretty hard, so it actually brings me to tears to have such beautiful photos to remember it with. I am so so grateful for these beautiful keepsakes.

Natalie and her husband are amazing! My hubby does not enjoy taking photos. Natalie was able to make us feel at ease and have fun with our session. She went above and beyond! I was expecting the typical sit here, pose this way, smile, click. NOPE! She asked us intimate questions about our lives. She played music that we love. She created an atmosphere and a mood that made our anniversary photos an experience. We are so thankful for the memories she helped us to create. Also her unique artistry in how she photographed us. I’m in love with the results. Thank you Natalie and Nate 💖
