Pregnancy is a wild ride—one minute you’re glowing, the next you’re crying because a dog in a commercial was just so brave. But one thing that never changes? The fact that you deserve maternity photos that feel like you—not like you were forced into a Pinterest board of stiff, awkward poses.
If you’re looking for maternity photoshoot ideas that go beyond the basic, I’ve got you. From studio sessions to creative concepts, let’s make sure your photos are something you’ll actually want to look at in 10 years.
Studio maternity sessions are the perfect way to get stunning, controlled lighting without having to worry about Idaho’s unpredictable weather (seriously, why is it snowing in May?). A studio session keeps the focus on you—whether you want soft, romantic vibes, a sleek editorial look, or just a cozy, intimate setup.
Pros:
✅ No stressing about the weather or bugs photobombing your pics
✅ Lighting is chef’s kiss perfect every time
✅ You get to wear whatever you want without worrying about mud, wind, or other outdoor nonsense
Cons:
❌ You can’t use “the light was bad” as an excuse for rescheduling
If being outside is your thing, let’s make the most of it. Whether it’s golden hour in the foothills, a dreamy forest session, or even a desert backdrop that looks straight out of a movie, outdoor maternity photos can be pure magic.
Pros:
✅ Natural light makes everything look good
✅ Gorgeous scenery = effortless backgrounds
✅ More space to move around and get those candid, dreamy shots
Cons:
❌ Mother Nature does not care about your plans
❌ Some locations require permits, because apparently, we need permission to enjoy pretty places
Want to feel like a literal goddess? A milk bath photoshoot might be for you. Picture you, floating in a dreamy, flower-filled bath, radiating soft, otherworldly energy. It’s moody, romantic, and a little extra—but in the best way.
Pros:
✅ Looks like an actual piece of art
✅ Soft, romantic, and dreamy as hell
✅ Perfect for showing off that bump in a unique way
Cons:
❌ Requires access to a bathtub (seems obvious, but worth mentioning)
❌ Can be messy—so maybe don’t do this in your landlord’s rental tub without a plan
Bringing older siblings into your maternity session? Amazing. Expecting them to behave for the whole session? Optimistic. But that’s okay! These photos are all about capturing the real, messy, sweet, chaotic good energy of your growing family.
Pros:
✅ Heart-meltingly cute moments with older siblings
✅ A way to make big brothers/sisters feel included in the journey
✅ Pure, unscripted joy (and maybe a little mischief)
Cons:
❌ Kids have approximately zero chill, so expect a little chaos
❌ Bribery may be necessary (snacks, toys, or promises of ice cream—whatever works)
If color photos are the loud, over-the-top main character, black & white images are the effortlessly cool, deep-feeling poet. They strip away distractions and focus on emotion, making every moment feel timeless and cinematic.
Pros:
✅ Timeless and artistic—like an old-school film still
✅ Puts all the attention on expressions and emotions
✅ Gives your photos a holy shit, that’s beautiful vibe
Cons:
❌ No color—so if you were planning on flexing that bold maternity gown, this might not be the moment
✨ A little bonus when working with me: If you’re dreaming of a black-and-white maternity photoshoot, we’ll go all in on that timeless, moody vibe—but don’t worry, you’ll still get plenty of gorgeous in color images too.

Let's do this thing
I literally have no words. Natalie is so amazing and talented, and not to mention how kind she is. She has outdone herself! My pregnancy has actually been pretty hard, so it actually brings me to tears to have such beautiful photos to remember it with. I am so so grateful for these beautiful keepsakes.

Natalie and her husband are amazing! My hubby does not enjoy taking photos. Natalie was able to make us feel at ease and have fun with our session. She went above and beyond! I was expecting the typical sit here, pose this way, smile, click. NOPE! She asked us intimate questions about our lives. She played music that we love. She created an atmosphere and a mood that made our anniversary photos an experience. We are so thankful for the memories she helped us to create. Also her unique artistry in how she photographed us. I’m in love with the results. Thank you Natalie and Nate 💖
