Senior year exists in a weird little in-between space.

You are still very much the person who has been showing up to class, seeing the same friends, wearing the same favorite clothes, and living your regular life.

But there is also a cap and gown hanging somewhere reminding you that this version of life has an expiration date.

That is exactly why I love doing both during senior portraits.

For this fall senior session at Swan Falls, we used two outfits with completely different jobs.

The first was casual. It preserved the person who was actually living senior year.

The second was their cap and gown. It documented the milestone they were about to cross.

Same person.

Same location.

Two different parts of the story.

And Swan Falls gave us a particularly good place to do it because the area has so much visual range without requiring a giant multi-location adventure. There is the Snake River, canyon landscape, open Idaho sky, historic hydroelectric structures, and the kind of late-season texture that makes fall portraits feel grounded without requiring everybody to stand inside a pumpkin patch.

Why Swan Falls Works So Well for Senior Pictures

Swan Falls sits along the Snake River south of Kuna and gives you several different visual environments in one general area.

Idaho Power manages Swan Falls Park beside the historic dam and powerhouse. The day-use park is free and currently includes restrooms, picnic tables, fishing access, interpretive signs, and accessible amenities. The historic Swan Falls site dates to 1901, making it the oldest hydroelectric generating site on the Snake River.

That history gives senior portraits an interesting backdrop without making the location feel overly formal.

You can use architecture.

Open river views.

Rock.

Dry grasses.

Canyon walls.

Sky.

And depending on current access, parts of the dam environment itself.

It is a completely different feeling from a downtown Boise senior session.

Senior Photos Do Not Have to Be Only About Graduating

I think this is the biggest reason I like doing a casual outfit and a cap and gown in the same senior session.

Graduation is important.

It deserves photographs.

But your entire personality is not:

person who successfully completed twelve years of school.

There is a whole human under the gown.

The casual outfit gives us room for photographs that feel connected to everyday senior year rather than only the ceremony waiting at the end of it.

Those photos can show:

• how you dress right now
• how you move
• your current style
• your personality
• the version of yourself your friends actually recognize

Then we bring out the cap and gown and acknowledge:

Yeah.

This chapter is ending too.

Neither set of photographs is more important.

They tell different pieces of the same story.

Why Two Outfits Work So Well for Swan Falls Senior Pictures

Two outfits are useful when each one creates something new.

Not simply because somebody once declared senior portraits require wardrobe changes.

For this session:

Outfit one = personality.

Outfit two = milestone.

That is a meaningful difference.

If you are choosing two ordinary outfits that photograph almost identically, changing may not be worth losing fifteen minutes of your session.

But changing from your normal clothes into a cap and gown visibly changes the story.

Suddenly we can make photographs about transition.

Graduation.

Movement.

That strange feeling of being almost done.

It earns the wardrobe change.

I Like Starting With the Casual Outfit

For most two-outfit senior sessions like this, I prefer starting casually.

There are a few reasons.

First, you get time to settle into being photographed before we introduce the most obviously “graduation” part.

Most seniors do not arrive at their session already operating at professional-model levels of comfort.

Normal.

We can walk.

Talk.

Move around.

Figure out which kinds of direction feel natural.

By the time the cap and gown comes out, the camera is not quite as weird anymore.

Second, casual photographs usually benefit from having a little more available light.

Cap-and-gown photographs can look incredible later because graduation robes move beautifully when the light gets lower and the sky becomes more dramatic.

And third:

It keeps the gown clean.

There is something deeply annoying about dragging a graduation gown around for an hour before we actually need it.

How to Make Cap and Gown Senior Pictures Feel Natural

Cap and gown photos can very quickly become:

• stand
• hold diploma
• smile
• turn slightly
• tassel
• done

We can do better.

Graduation clothing moves.

Use that.

Walk.

Carry the gown over your shoulder.

Put it on partway through the sequence.

Hold the cap.

Toss it if the location and wind allow.

Turn into the breeze.

Let the gown move behind you.

Sit somewhere safe.

Laugh when the tassel inevitably develops its own agenda.

The cap and gown is important because of what it represents.

It does not require every photograph to become formal.

What Should You Wear Under Your Graduation Gown?

Something you are comfortable being photographed in.

That sounds obvious until the gown opens, moves in the wind, or comes off halfway through the session.

If you want your outfit underneath to appear in photographs, choose it intentionally.

You could wear:

• a dress
• trousers and a nice top
• jeans
• boots
• sneakers
• something connected to your personal style
• something in your future school colors
• something simple that keeps attention on the gown

There is no universal graduation-photo uniform underneath the graduation uniform.

Also consider the weather.

If we are photographing at Swan Falls during fall, a thin summer outfit underneath may become aggressively less charming once the sun drops.

Bring a Garment Bag

Your cap and gown should have somewhere clean to wait during the first half of the session.

A garment bag is ideal.

At minimum, bring something clean and dry where you can set it without putting the entire graduation ensemble directly onto dirt, gravel, or whatever mystery substance is currently occupying the back seat of your car.

Also bring:

• your cap
• tassel
• any cords or stoles you genuinely want included
• bobby pins if they help secure the cap
• lint roller if the gown attracts everything within a six-mile radius

Little preparation means we can spend more time photographing and less time conducting emergency tassel surgery.

This real session had two clear chapters.

First Half: Casual Senior Portraits

We started with the senior’s everyday outfit.

This gave us room to use the landscape without immediately making every photograph about graduation.

We could walk.

Use the river and canyon environment.

Create both closer portraits and wider photographs.

Let the session loosen up naturally.

Outfit Change

Then we transitioned into the cap and gown.

Because the second look had such a specific purpose, the change felt like a real shift instead of simply another outfit for variety.

Second Half: Cap and Gown Photos

The later portion became more explicitly about graduation.

But we still used movement and the environment rather than making every image a static portrait.

That combination is what I would recommend to another senior too.

Person first.

Milestone second.

My Recommended Two-Outfit Swan Falls Timeline

The exact times should be built around the sunset on your actual date, but a fall Swan Falls session can usually work beautifully with roughly 90 minutes to two hours.

About 90 Minutes Before Sunset

Meet and start in your casual outfit.

This gives us good usable light for walking, environmental portraits, and photographs where we want more of the landscape visible.

Around 45 to 60 Minutes Before Sunset

Change into the cap and gown.

Give yourself an actual ten or fifteen minutes for this.

Do not build a timeline where changing clothes apparently occurs through teleportation.

Final 30 to 45 Minutes

Use the cap and gown in the warmer, lower evening light.

This is where movement in the robe and tassel can become especially good.

If the sunset turns interesting, we already have the most meaningful graduation pieces ready.

Right After Sunset

If conditions are comfortable, stay for a few quieter blue-hour portraits.

The light becomes cooler and softer very quickly.

You do not need long.

Sometimes five extra minutes gives the gallery a completely different ending.

Fall Light at Swan Falls

Fall changes quickly.

That is part of why timing matters.

An evening that feels bright when you arrive can become genuinely chilly and dark not long after sunset.

Unlike summer, we do not have endless evening light to keep procrastinating in.

I like building the session backward from sunset and then considering the terrain.

Open areas may keep usable light longer.

Canyon walls and structures can lose direct light earlier.

Cloud cover changes everything again.

This is why I do not recommend copying the exact clock time from somebody else’s Swan Falls session.

Use your date.

Use the actual sunset.

Then build around what the landscape is doing.

For the current forecast before your session, I recommend checking the official National Weather Service forecast rather than relying only on whatever weather widget appears first on your phone.

What If It Is Cloudy?

We take senior pictures.

Clouds are not an automatic cancellation.

Overcast light can actually be incredibly useful because it gives us soft light across areas that may be much harsher under direct sun.

The river can feel moodier.

The canyon colors can deepen.

You may lose the dramatic golden sunset.

You gain something else.

The decision to reschedule should be based on conditions that affect safety or comfort, not simply whether the weather failed to deliver the exact aesthetic we imagined.

Rain, severe wind, lightning, unsafe roads, or other hazardous conditions are different conversations.

Gray sky?

We know what to do with gray sky.

Wind and Graduation Caps Have a Complicated Relationship

Swan Falls is open enough that wind deserves a plan.

A cap and tassel introduce an exciting new aerodynamic challenge.

Bring bobby pins if your hairstyle and cap allow them.

Make sure the cap actually fits before your session.

Know which side the tassel should be on if that matters for your school’s tradition.

And understand that if it is genuinely windy, we may photograph the cap in your hands more often than on your head.

That can actually look better anyway.

The gown is another story.

Wind through graduation robes?

Excellent.

Wind carrying your graduation cap halfway toward Nevada?

Less excellent.

We adapt.

What to Wear for Fall Senior Pictures at Swan Falls

Fall works beautifully with the colors around Swan Falls because the landscape tends to be earthy and relatively simple.

That means your clothes can go in several directions.

You could stay neutral.

Use richer autumn tones.

Wear denim.

Bring texture through knits, corduroy, jackets, leather, or boots.

Or wear something brighter and let yourself stand out from the environment.

The landscape does not require you to dress like the landscape.

The goal is not camouflage.

Bring Layers

Even if the layer never appears in a photograph, keep something warm in the car.

A jacket.

Sweater.

Coat.

Blanket.

Especially if you are changing into a cap and gown near sunset.

Cold changes body language fast.

Shoulders rise.

Hands disappear.

Smiles become survival-based.

Warm people are easier to photograph because warm people are capable of thinking about things other than being warm.

Comfortable Shoes Matter

Swan Falls is not a studio floor.

Depending on the exact area we use, there can be gravel, dirt, rock, slopes, and uneven natural surfaces.

Bring shoes you can actually walk in.

If your portrait shoes are different, carry them and change when needed.

You do not earn extra graduation honors for rolling an ankle in pursuit of the outfit.

Swan Falls Access and Current Conditions

This is one of those places where checking current information matters.

Swan Falls includes a mix of recreation areas associated with Idaho Power and adjacent BLM-managed public land, so I do not treat every part of the wider Swan Falls area as if it has exactly the same rules.

For the developed park, the official Swan Falls Park information (Idaho Power’s Swan Falls Park page) is where I would check current amenities and access before the session.

The BLM also manages the nearby Swan Falls Picnic Area within the broader public-land landscape, and its official page lists photography among the recreation activities available there.

Important 2026 Access Update

As of August 23, 2026, Idaho Power says the public pedestrian walkway across Swan Falls Dam is temporarily closed through October 2, 2026 while spillway maintenance is underway.

The day-use park, river access, campground, and boat launches remain open.

That matters if you are planning a fall session this year.

Do not arrive assuming you will be able to cross the dam because you saw somebody else’s senior portraits there.

Check current Swan Falls recreation updates (Idaho Power recreation updates) before your session because closures and maintenance change.

Future readers: if you are reading this after October 2026, please use the current Idaho Power page rather than treating a temporary closure from this article like ancient law.

Is Swan Falls Free?

Day use at Swan Falls Park is currently free.

The developed Idaho Power park has a reservable picnic shelter with a separate reservation fee, but ordinary day use does not currently require an entrance fee.

The nearby BLM Swan Falls Picnic Area is also currently listed as fee-free.

Always check current information before visiting because recreation policies can change.

Are Restrooms Available?

Idaho Power currently lists restrooms among the Swan Falls Park amenities.

That is genuinely useful when you are planning an outfit change.

But I still recommend arriving dressed in outfit one whenever possible.

A public recreation restroom is better used as backup than transformed into your personal senior-session dressing suite.

For the cap and gown change, the car is often easier if you are already wearing the outfit you plan to have underneath.

Do You Need Permission for Professional Senior Pictures?

This depends on exactly where we are photographing.

Idaho Power’s current recreation policies state that commercial activity requires advance written permission and that circumstances outside the listed rules should be coordinated with park management.

BLM has separate still-photography guidance for public lands. Portrait subjects such as high school graduates are not considered “models” under its still-photography test, but permits can still be required when photography uses certain props or sets, occurs where the public is not normally allowed, or requires onsite management to protect resources or reduce conflicts. BLM recommends contacting the local field office to determine whether a specific activity requires a permit.

For the Swan Falls BLM areas, the relevant office is the Four Rivers Field Office.

Basically:

Do not assume that one person’s previous photo session establishes permanent permission everywhere around Swan Falls.

Confirm the exact property and current rules.

Boring?

A little.

Better than discovering this in a parking lot while wearing your graduation gown?

Absolutely.

Accessibility at Swan Falls

Idaho Power currently lists Swan Falls Park as accessible.

That does not mean every possible portrait spot around the river, canyon, BLM land, shoreline, or dam has the same level of access.

Those are different things.

If accessibility matters for your senior session, choose the exact route intentionally.

We can consider:

• accessible parking
• restroom access
• shorter walking distances
• flatter surfaces
• places to sit
• staying closer to developed areas
• avoiding steep riverbank or canyon terrain
• using mobility devices without turning the session into an obstacle course

You do not need to scramble over rocks to prove you deserve outdoor senior pictures.

The location should work around your body.

Swan Falls Is Also Wildlife Habitat

The scenery is not the only thing happening here.

Swan Falls sits within the Morley Nelson Snake River Birds of Prey National Conservation Area, a protected landscape known for its concentration of nesting raptors.

That is a good reminder that we are photographing in habitat, not on an empty set.

Stay on durable surfaces.

Do not disturb wildlife.

Do not climb into sensitive areas because the angle looks slightly better.

Pack out everything you bring.

Do not leave graduation confetti.

Please.

The Snake River canyon does not need tiny plastic “2027” shapes embedded in it for eternity.

If you want a celebratory photograph, toss your cap.

Jump.

Dance.

Pop your arms into the air.

Use something we can completely control and remove.

What to Bring for Swan Falls Senior Pictures

• cords or stole if relevant
• garment bag
• bobby pins
• comfortable walking shoes
• portrait shoes if different
• water
• snack
• warm layer
• lint roller
• hairbrush or comb if wind bothers you
• phone
• portable charger
• any medication or accessibility supplies you need

If you have a diploma cover and want it included, bring it.

If you do not, we absolutely do not need to pretend you are holding an invisible diploma.

There are many other things human arms are capable of doing.

What If You Want a Completely Different Senior Photo Location?

Swan Falls works for someone who wants river, canyon, history, and open Idaho landscape.

That does not mean every senior should use it.

Which outfit should I wear first?

For a session like this, I usually recommend starting casually and saving the cap and gown for the second half.

That gives you time to get comfortable with the camera, keeps the gown clean, and lets us use later evening light for graduation portraits.

What should I wear under my cap and gown?

Wear something you like enough to photograph without the gown too.

The robe may move or open in the wind, and we may intentionally remove it for a few portraits.

Comfort matters more than following an imaginary graduation fashion rule.

How do you keep a graduation cap on in the wind?

Sometimes bobby pins help.

Sometimes the answer is simply:

we do not.

Holding the cap can make great photographs too.

The goal is not winning a battle against Idaho weather.

What happens if it is cloudy?

If conditions are safe and comfortable, we usually keep going.

Clouds can give us beautiful soft light and a moodier Swan Falls landscape.

Weather does not need to be perfect for the photographs to work.

What if I hate posing?

You are part of a very large club.

You do not need to arrive knowing what to do.

I give direction, create movement, and adjust things when needed so you are not standing beside the Snake River wondering whether you have suddenly forgotten how shoulders work.

Your senior portraits can be completely personality-based.

The cap and gown is worth including when documenting graduation matters to you.

It is not required for the session to count.

The cap and gown mattered.

Of course it did.

Graduation marks the end of a massive piece of your life.

But before the gown came out, we also made photographs of the person who was actually finishing that chapter.

Not only the graduate.

The human.

That matters too.

Senior year is already full of people asking what comes next.

What school?

What job?

What major?

What plan?

Your senior pictures get to do something different.

They can remember who you were before you had all those answers.

The clothes you liked.

The way you laughed.

The version of yourself standing beside the Snake River in fall, knowing something was ending but not yet knowing exactly what everything after it would look like.

Then we put on the cap and gown.
