Getting married in Idaho? Hell yes! Whether you’re eloping in the mountains or planning a micro wedding in the forest, you’re going to need one crucial thing before you make it official: a marriage license. Lucky for you, Idaho makes the process fairly painless (no blood tests required—because this isn’t the 1800s). Let’s break it down in a way that doesn’t bore you to death.

Everything you need to know about getting your Idaho marriage license—fees, rules, and tips for eloping. No fluff, just the good stuff.

You can get your marriage license at any county clerk’s office in Idaho—and it doesn’t have to be in the county where you’re getting married. Convenient, right? Just walk in, bring the required documents, and walk out ready to make things official.

Yep. Both of you have to show up in person—no mailing it in or sending your mom to handle it for you.

To find your nearest clerk’s office, check out Idaho’s County Clerk Directory (just double-check their hours before you go).

Before you waltz into the county clerk’s office, make sure you have:

  • Valid ID (Driver’s license, passport, or military ID)
  • Cash or Card (License fees range from $28–$31 depending on the county)
  • Your Future Spouse (Kinda important)

Nope! Idaho doesn’t require witnesses to sign your marriage license, which makes it chef’s kiss perfect for elopements.

As much as I wish your four-legged BFF could sign the official paperwork, they can’t. However, they can be your honorary best dog, ring bearer, or just there to photobomb your vows. They can also sign your decorative license which is the copy that you keep for yourselves.

Your Idaho marriage license is good for a year from the date of issue. But once you’ve said “I do,” it needs to be filed ASAP.

None. Zero. Nada. You can get married the same day you pick up your license. Idaho respects the impulse decision.

Your officiant is responsible for sending the signed marriage license back to the county clerk within 30 days. (If they forget, that’s a problem—so maybe don’t have your tipsy uncle officiate.)

Once the county processes your paperwork, you can request certified copies for name changes, legal proof, and general “look at me, I’m married!” moments. Some counties let you order online, so check with your local clerk’s office.

If you’re planning an adventure elopement in one of Idaho’s stunning outdoor spaces (like Sawtooth National Forest or Bruneau Sand Dunes), check if a permit is required.

Idaho is super chill about who can marry you. Religious leaders, judges, and even a friend with an online ordination can officiate. My husband, Nate, is ordained and creates the most heartfelt ceremonies—so if you need an officiant, hit me up.

How to Get Your Marriage License in Idaho: A No-BS Guide

Let's do this thing

I literally have no words. Natalie is so amazing and talented, and not to mention how kind she is. She has outdone herself! My pregnancy has actually been pretty hard, so it actually brings me to tears to have such beautiful photos to remember it with. I am so so grateful for these beautiful keepsakes.

Natalie and her husband are amazing! My hubby does not enjoy taking photos. Natalie was able to make us feel at ease and have fun with our session. She went above and beyond! I was expecting the typical sit here, pose this way, smile, click. NOPE! She asked us intimate questions about our lives. She played music that we love. She created an atmosphere and a mood that made our anniversary photos an experience. We are so thankful for the memories she helped us to create. Also her unique artistry in how she photographed us. I’m in love with the results. Thank you Natalie and Nate 💖
